This course will introduce you to the exciting world of BioInformatics. You'll see how scientists are changing the world using AI, genomics, and Big Data to impact diverse areas across industry and medicine.

SHANE BRUBAKER, BS, MS, a senior manager of bioinformatics software engineering at Myriad Genetics, is passionate about using bioinformatics and interdisciplinary science to advance the human condition. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science from Purdue University and a Master’s of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Oregon. He has combined knowledge of software engineering and biological science in the fields of human health, synthetic biology, genomics, biofuels, and genetic testing. His interests also include connectomics and brain modeling, machine learning, and sequencing. His teaching experience includes the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, the Joint Genome Institute, and other settings. He believes that training the next generation of scientists is critical to address key problems in the environment, agricultural, and health sectors.

This class meets simultaneously in a classroom and remotely via Zoom. Students are expected to attend and participate in the course, either in-person or remotely, during the days and times that are specified on the course schedule. Students attending remotely are also strongly encouraged to have their cameras on to get the most out of the remote learning experience. Students attending the class in-person are expected to bring a laptop to each class meeting.
